The Institute, at the invitation of and in collaboration with the Singapore Academy of Law, conducted a specially designed International Commercial Arbitration Course in Doha, Qatar, for the Centre for Legal and Judicial Studies of the Ministry of Justice of Qatar. It was conducted over 3 days from 25 to 27 November 2018. The Course was formally opened in the morning of 25 November 2018 at the Hilton Doha by Qatar’s Minister of Justice and Acting Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs His Excellency Mr Issa bin Saad al Jafali al Nuaimi, in the presence of the Ambassador of Singapore to Qatar His Excellency Mr Jai Sohan Singh, the Director of the Centre for Legal and Judicial Studies Fatima Abdulaziz Bilal, and the Senior Director of Legal Development and Chief Legal Counsel of the Singapore Academy of Law, Mr Sriram Chakravarthi.

The teaching faculty who travelled to Qatar to conduct the Course on behalf of the Institute were Mr Chia Chor Leong, a Council Member of the Institute and the Chairman of the Education Committee as well as the Scheme Arbitration Committee, and Mr Mohan Pillay, the Honorary Treasurer of the Institute.
The Course covered topics such as the arbitration agreement, constitution of the arbitral tribunal, rights and duties of the tribunal, law and rules governing the arbitration, arbitration procedure, conduct of arbitration hearings, the Award and its recognition and enforcement, with special reference to the Arbitration Law of Qatar promulgated by Law No. 2 of 2017.
The Course was attended by 28 delegates from the Ministry of Justice of Qatar, the Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration, the Qatar Investment Authority, the Qatar University, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment of Qatar and other organisations. The feedback from the delegates was extremely positive and gratifying, and included reviews such as “very informative”, “very useful”, “comprehensive”, “all good” and “perfect”.
