SIArb initiated the formation of a Panel of Arbitrators in November 2005 following the establishment of a Code of Conduct for Arbitrators and the Arbitration Rules of the Institute. Members were invited to submit their applications and 107 members were admitted to the Panel after a process of selection by the Panel Review Committee. The List of Arbitrators in the Panel will be updated periodically.

The Council of SIArb has set  various criteria for applicants' admission to the Primary and Secondary Panels to ensure that only suitably qualified persons from their respective professional / academic fields with the relevant experience are admitted on the Panels. Council retains a general discretion not to admit any candidate despite having met all the criteria, for reasons which it considers appropriate.

The SIArb Panels are only open to current and fully paid up Fellows of the Institute.  The applicant must also have no criminal conviction involving moral turpitude or fraud.
