About the Speakers:
Mr. Gary Born is Chair of the International Arbitration Practice Group at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP. Mr. Born is widely recognised as the world's leading authority on international arbitration and litigation. He has served as counsel in over 650 arbitrations, including several of the largest arbitrations in ICC and ad hoc history, and has sat as arbitrator in more than 220 institutional and ad hoc arbitrations. He is the author of International Commercial Arbitration (2nd ed. 2014), the preeminent treatise in the field, as well as International Arbitration: Law and Practice (2nd ed. 2015) and a number of other notable works on international dispute resolution. Mr. Born also serves as President of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) Court of Arbitration. He is an Honorary Professor of Law at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland and Tsinghua University, Beijing, and teaches regularly at law schools in Europe, Asia, and North and South America.

Dr. Michael Hwang SC has recently retired as the Chief Justice of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts. He is a graduate of Oxford University both at undergraduate and post-graduate levels and a former Visiting and Adjunct Professor of National University of Singapore. In 1997, he was appointed as one of the first 12 Senior Counsel (SC) of the Supreme Court of Singapore. His former appointments include being a Judicial Commissioner (a Contract Judge) of the Supreme Court, President of the Law Society of Singapore, a Vice Chairman of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), a Vice President of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), and a Court Member of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA). He is currently Singapore’s non-resident Ambassador to Argentina having previously been Ambassador to Switzerland. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of the DIFC Courts in June 2010, having served as Deputy Chief Justice since April 2005. In 2014 he was conferred an Honorary LLD by the University of Sydney, where his legal career began as a law teacher in 1966-7.

Mr. VK Rajah SC graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1982 with several prizes for academic merit and subsequently obtained an LLM (First Class) from University of Cambridge in 1986. He was appointed a Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Singapore on 2 January 2004, a Judge on 1 November 2004 and a Judge of Appeal on 11 April 2007. He assumed office as the Attorney-General of the Republic of Singapore on 25 June 2014 until his retirement on 13 January 2017. While on the Bench, he authored more than 200 reported judgments, including several appellate judgments on arbitration. Currently, he undertakes arbitration work as well as a limited amount of commercial dispute resolution work and mediation at Essex Court Chambers Duxton (Singapore Group Practice).

Professor Lucy Reed is Director of the NUS Centre for International Law and Professor, NUS Law Faculty. Lucy joined the NUS Law Faculty in 2016 after retiring from the international firm Freshfields, where she led the international arbitration group. She is active as an arbitrator, and is a Vice-President of SIAC and ICCA. Among other appointments, Lucy served as a Commissioner on the Eritrea-Ethiopia Claims Commission and Co-Director of the Claims Resolution Tribunal for Dormant Accounts in Switzerland. While with the US State Department’s Office of the Legal Adviser, she was the US Agent to the Iran-US Claims Tribunal. Lucy speaks and writes regularly on international arbitration topics, and one of her most-cited articles remains Practical Guidelines for Interviewing, Selecting and Challenging Party-Appointed Arbitrators in International Commercial Arbitration (with Doak Bishop, 14 Arb. Int’l (1998)).

About the Chairperson:
Mr. Chan Leng Sun, SC is a Senior Counsel of the Supreme Court of Singapore and a member of Essex Court Chambers Duxton (Singapore Group Practice). He is qualified in Malaysia, Singapore and England. He has a broad commercial practice that covers technical disputes, maritime law, international trade, insurance and company law. Leng Sun is Deputy Chairman of the SIAC Board of Directors and the SGX Appeals Committee. He is a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR. He is the former Global Head of Arbitration of Baker McKenzie and the Immediate Past President of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators. Leng Sun is a Chartered Arbitrator. He has acted as counsel or sat as arbitrator in arbitrations seated in Asia, Europe and USA under various rules and lex arbitri. Leng Sun is recognized among the top lawyers worldwide by "Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2018", "Who's Who Legal - Litigation 2017" and, "Who's Who Legal - Arbitration 2017". He is described by Chambers Asia-Pacific 2017 as "one of the best arbitrators and practitioners in arbitration.” |
